Tonight on ABC Family is
Greek's season premiere (9PM/8PM central). Greek is a show about college and Greek life. Some of the portrayal of Greek life is spot-on, but some of it is completely wrong.
Greek has a character named Cappie. It seems like Cappie has had every college major under the sun, because whenever anyone asks him for help, he'll say, "I can help, I used to be a phych major," or, "I used to be a bio major," or, "Let me help, I used to be a polymer science major," etc.
It seems like my college career thus far has reflected Cappie's. I'm on my 3rd major in 3 semesters.
(Pause for laughter.)
When I was in high school, I would hear the statistic like
the average college student changes his or her major 7.968 times or whatever. I'd always wonder why students would change their majors so often.
I finally know. Picking a major is a huge commitment. (Which makes me wonder if guys switch majors more than girls.) Choosing (and sticking with) a major is a commitment on two levels. First, you're going to be learning your major for four years. Second, to some extent, your major is going to decide what you do
for the rest of your life. That's scary!
College students - if you know what you want your major to be, great. If you don't, no worries. Try a bunch of different classes out. You'll eventually find the right fit. If you don't, I don't know what to tell you. Triple major or something.
